IMDG Code 42-24 Effective January 1, 2026

Release time:

2025-12-15

Avoid Rejections. Prevent Delays. Ship Fully Compliant.

Starting January 1, 2026, IMDG Code Edition 42-24 will officially replace Edition 41-22. Shipments prepared under the old version may be rejected by carriers, held at ports, or forced into re-documentation.

This update impacts not only traditional Dangerous Goods, but also battery cargo, electric vehicles, and shipments previously treated as Non-DG.

For shippers, this is a compliance deadline. For us as your freight forwarder, it is where we add value.

What You Need to Know — Fast

Documents must be updated before end of 2025:

Sea Transport Assessment Report must align with IMDG 42-24

MSDS / SDS (Section 14) must reference IMDG Code 42-24

Any reference to 41-22 = non-compliant

Electric vehicle reclassification:

UN3171 scope significantly reduced

Most EVs now ship as:

UN3556 – Lithium-ion battery vehicles

UN3557 – Lithium metal battery vehicles

UN3558 – Sodium-ion battery vehicles

New operational requirements:

Mandatory Class 9A battery labels for UN3556/3557/3558

Updated LP903 for lithium & sodium batteries

New Packing Instruction P912 for EV loading and securing

What Happens If You Wait

Late preparation commonly results in:

Booking refusal by ocean carriers

Cargo on hold at terminal

Demurrage and storage costs

EV and battery project delays
