Freight Rates Rebound! US Routes Surge as Carriers Announce GRI
Release time:
2025-09-02
After 11 consecutive weeks of decline, global container freight rates have finally bounced back. With major carriers increasing blank sailings to control capacity, US trade lane rates have surged sharply, ending a long downtrend.
Market Update
The latest Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) climbed by 29.7 points to 1445.06, a weekly increase of 2.1%—the first rebound after nearly three months of continuous decline.
US West Coast (USWC): up 16.97% per FEU
US East Coast (USEC): up 9.68% per FEU
Europe & Mediterranean routes: still sliding, down 11.21% and 3.59% respectively
According to industry insiders, multiple carriers have already announced General Rate Increases (GRI) effective September 1, with spot rates expected to rise by about USD 750 per FEU.
Rate Adjustments in Detail
Carriers’ planned increases are significant:
US West Coast: from USD 1450–1600/FEU → USD 2300–2400/FEU
US East Coast: from USD 2400/FEU → USD 3200/FEU
Europe: GRI postponed until September 15
This means that USWC freight rates could surge by over 50% within a single week, with the SCFI already reflecting part of this momentum.
What This Means for Shippers
Rising shipping costs: US freight rates are no longer falling, and cost pressure is expected to persist.
Uncertain peak season: September may see a “delayed peak,” while the year-end holiday rush (Christmas, New Year) could push rates even higher.
Capacity shortage risks: With blank sailings cutting available space, securing slots will become more difficult.
Recommendations for Importers & Cross-Border Sellers
Book early: Secure space ahead of peak weeks to avoid last-minute price spikes or rolled cargo.
Recalculate landed cost: Factor in freight increases when setting product pricing and profit margins.
Leverage route flexibility: US lanes are rebounding, while Europe remains lower—plan shipments strategically.
Work with a reliable freight forwarder: During volatile markets, dependable partners ensure space and smooth deliveries.
