New U.S. Tariffs Coming: 50% Duties on Furniture & Building Materials Starting October 1

Release time:

2025-09-26

Dear Customers,

On September 25, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social that starting October 1, 2025, the United States will impose a new round of tariffs on multiple imported products. The measures include:

50% tariffs on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and related building materials

30% tariffs on upholstered furniture (sofas, beds, etc.)

100% tariffs on patented and branded pharmaceuticals

25% tariffs on all imported heavy trucks

This policy especially targets the furniture and building materials industries, which are key categories in China–U.S. trade.

Market Data

The U.S. imports over $70 billion worth of furniture and building materials annually, with nearly 40% sourced from China.

In 2024 alone, U.S. imports of upholstered furniture from China exceeded $15 billion.

Chinese-made cabinets and bathroom fixtures accounted for about 35% of the U.S. market.

Clearly, a significant volume of Chinese exports will be directly affected by the new tariffs.

What This Means for Importers & Exporters

Higher clearance costs – All shipments arriving after Oct. 1 will face the new tariff rates.

Order fulfillment risks – Rising costs may cause buyers to delay or even refuse delivery.

Profit margin squeeze – Exporters will need to reassess pricing strategies.

Supply chain shifts – U.S. importers may turn to Vietnam, Mexico, and other regions for alternatives.

Our Suggestions

Ship before October 1 to avoid the new tariffs.

Split shipments / use LCL to lower the risk per shipment.

Consider DDP/DDU solutions – let us handle duty payment and customs clearance for you.

Communicate with U.S. buyers early to align on responsibilities and costs.

Explore alternative sourcing or transit options to mitigate future tariff risks.
