China-U.S. Air Freight Surges as Rates Spike Over 30%, Peak Season Kicks Off Early

China-U.S. air freight is experiencing a strong resurgence this May amid recovering global supply chains and renewed trade momentum. Cross-border e-commerce sales are booming, and Amazon FBA restocking is driving significant demand on key routes from China to the U.S.

Forwarders report that flights from Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Shanghai to major U.S. destinations—Los Angeles, Chicago, New York—are nearly fully booked. General cargo now requires booking 7–10 days in advance, with high-value goods squeezing out standard shipments in some cases.

Since early May, airfreight rates have risen 15%–25% across the board, with peak-time and direct flights seeing increases over 30%. Many e-commerce sellers say the peak season “has arrived earlier and stronger than expected.”

In addition, U.S. Customs has tightened inspection on electronics—particularly lithium battery and Bluetooth-enabled items—leading to clearance delays of 1–2 days. Experts advise shippers to prepare in advance, secure space early, and work with experienced freight forwarders who offer reliable schedules and customs expertise.

This surge is expected to continue until late June, ahead of mid-year shopping festivals, with some relief likely by July.
